Best Dry dog food for Hip Displacia?
My 9 month old German Shepherd puppy was diagnosed with Hip Displacia about 3 months ago. From what the Veterinarians tell me, he was practically born with it and there was nothing we could do to prevent it. I have him on Cosequin Glucosamine tablets, which help but I’m trying to find a dry dog food that I can feed him that will give him a double boost of good vitamins and minerals to delay the inevitable hip surgery. I don’t want to give him the surgery until he at least a couple years old because I’ve been told by many Vets it only is guarenteed to last 4-5 years tops. So I figure if I do the surgery to young, he won’t live past 5 and that breaks our hearts. Plus the surgery is extremely expensive and I need to save some major $$$. So I’m looking for a good dry dog food that will also help improve his health so we can give this dog the best quality of life. I am up for anything at this point. If anyone knows of any better pills either, that would be helpful! I’m stationed in Germany right now and the Veterinarians either don’t speak good English, or are unqualified American Veterinarians that don’t know anything about prevention and treatment for this disease. So I’m stuck! Thanks for any info! It would be great if there were people out there who are Veterinarians who could answer this question so at least I know I’m not going to hurt my dog. Any answer I get I will follow up with my puppy’s regular Vet, just in case. Thanks!

Proper weight management is critical. Excess weight puts undue stress on the hip joints, so be well versed in the proper amount of food for your dog’s breed and age (this varies greatly according to your brand of dog food).

I’m sorry that I cannot offer any advice but, I owned a German Shepherd once who came down with hip displacia at age 14. It was terrible. I’m very sorry to hear about your dog. Good luck.
Seems Hip dysplacia reduces the amount of exercise your dog can do, you need to make sure you have him on a low calorie diet. Making sure his weight is always healthy is critical in helping reduce the pain for your dog. High protein and low carb diets are good for dogs with Hip Dysplacia
Keep your puppy lean, weight will cause him more harm. Do some research on vitamin c and hip displasia. There are many studies that show that vitamin c can help a great deal with this condition and can be used as a preventative. I found some studies by searching the internet, I’m sure you will be able to find the information. I hope it helps your pup. Some dogs have HD so bad they have to be euthanized at a young age to end the suffering. I hope you are able to find solutions for your pup.
that is so sad. i have a German Shepherd who is nearly 7 years old, and the thought of hip dysplasia fills me with dread. could you try breaking up cod liver oil or castor oil capsules into his food, as these are good for preventing joint problems. as the others have said regulating his weight is important as if he gets too heavy it puts more stress on the joints, also not too much excersise as this does the same. i’m so sorry for you and your puppy, it’s such a shame that breeders are still allowing this to happen. but on the good side, is the fact that he’s been diagnosed young, and he will benefit from the operation. maybe they say 4 – 5 years tops to be on the lower side, as i have heard of GS where it has lasted longer. but 4-5 years is better than none. it’s such a pity as i know how quickly we fall in love with our dogs and we will do anything for them. i hope everything goes well. good luck. x
