Can I give my dog glucosamine while he is on Pheno?
I have a 6 year old Retriever/Spaniel mix. He has been on phenobarbital for 3 years now due to cluster seizures that started when he turned 3. He hasn’t had any seizures in about 2 years but the vet (and myself) want him to stay on it just to be safe. He is now showing signs of joint pain in his hind legs. I’ve done the research but can’t come up with an answer as to whether or not it is ok to give him chewable glucosamine tablets while he is on the pheno. Any help would be appreciated!

I have had and still have several cocker spaniels, including one that had every illness cockers (and spaniels) are known for including seizures. I know what you’re going through and how relieved you are that they are under control.
You can give dogs glucosamine tabs with chondroitin and it won’t impact other meds he is taking. In fact, you can give him the same ones for human consumption, but just need to talk to vet re dosage because it will depend on his weight. That’s just an idea since they may be cheaper than ones sold specifically for dogs. My vet has me giving the human ones to my soon to be 16 (june 09) year old cocker.
Depending on how severe his cartilege deterioration is, you may want to ask your vet about Dasuquin. It’s a joint health supplement by prescription only and in addition to the glucosamine and chondroitin, it also has MSM. My specialist prescribed this for my cocker that has is going to eventually need knee surgery and it has really helped. You should really look into this product. (see links below for more info)
However, if he is already showing signs of joint pain and depending on the severity, you may want to talk to vet about prescription for Rimadyl which is a chewable pain med (NSAID) for dogs. Rimadyl is OK to give with pheno, but cannot be mixed with steroids (e.g., prednisone), aspirin, etc.
Sorry for such a long answer, but I know what you’re going through.

ask your Vet to make sure & be safe
Not a problem. There are no know drug interactions.
(in fact, Glucosamine/chond. really isn’t even a drug, it’s a natural substance found in joints)
I think it is okay to do that. I only say this because i know glucosamine is a nutrition supplement and should not interact with pheno. I worked at a vet office for a while and many older dogs or dogs with seizures were taking a few drugs at once. To be safe consult your vet, but I can’t see it being a problem seeing as its just a supplement. I take it for my knees and it has not interacted with any meds I have taken.
