Dog arthritis prevention – glucosamine and chondroitin?
What is a safe dose? I went to petco and petsmart and near all the bottles for this mixture of medicine says either 1/2 tablet to 1 tablet per 40lbs of weight.
My dog is a Pomeranian at 7lbs. I’ve been told it would be a good idea to put him on glucosamine and chondroitin for the prevention of arthritis.

OK so if your dog is 7 pounds I’d give her a 1/4 of a tablet. That would be suitable for a 10 pound dog. She’s close enough to that to handle it.
glucosamine is the best. it works on my older dog great. you can get smaller doses for your dog. you can get them at Target for like $4.99 for a big bottle.
in my experience, chondroitin doesn’t work as well in the long run.
Try looking in the chemist, you can find exactly the same thing for people but the dosages can be smaller. Check out the arthritis relief tablets containing more than just glucosamine and chondroitin, they often contain other herbal remedies, some of which are safe for dogs, some only in small doses, which the tablets have. If you cant find one you feel comfortable with, try the powder form instead of the tablets, its less concentrated, and easier to just sprinkle 1/2 a teaspoon on their food. Hope i have been some help, i get people arthritis tablets containing, fish oil, sea kelp extract, zinc, glucosamine and chondroitin, but i have large dogs, all weighing over 40lbs each, so dosing them is easier, one gets 4 tablets daily (213lbs), 1+1/2 for 3 of them and one gets one tablet daily.
You might be wasting your money. There was an item on TV tonite where they said that glucosamine and chondroitin are about worthless and totally ineffective in humans. I know that doesn’t translate to dogs, but it is something to consider.
