Evolve Senior Dog formula changed. What now?
I have an 11 year old GSDx that has been doing very well on a base of Evolve Senior dry formula. I wish he was on raw diet, as my other dog is, but the reality is it’s just not for him. He will eat nothing that is ’slimy’. Chicken wings are the only things I have been able to get him to eat at least fairly consistently. As it is, even with food he likes, I have to remind him to go eat his breakfast multiple times before he is finished every morning. He is already quite slender, and at his age I’m just not willing to force the issue with him.
Anyway, Evolve has changed its formula. The biggest reason I fed it (aside from the fact he liked it) is that it had 360mg of Glucosamine per CUP right in the food. (Getting him to eat any kind of capsules or tablets is a total nightmare) Now, the new formula has dropped to only 200ppm. He has joint issues, and needs these supplements.
I plan to switch foods just because there isn’t much reason for me to stay with Evolve anymore. (and because the new formula is senior/lite, the fat and protein levels in the food have also been dropped).
Can I feed him a meal of some new food once a day, and feed him a meal of chicken wings the other? The only reason I’m thinking about trying to get him on daily chicken wings is because of the good natural source of cartilage. Am I going to be over doing it with bone by doing this? Would I be better off just supplementing with something else for the glucosamine? Would it be better to feed wings in the morning or evening?
I’m open to suggestions. I really don’t know what direction I want to head in now.
I like Taste of the Wild, and I can get it locally for a pretty good price. It is likely that will be my primary kibble if I can make it work for him.

You seem pretty involved with his feeding so I don’t know if I can help, but if hes already thin and picky switching foods may only cause more problems down the road. I assume you already know to slowly mix any new food in with the old over several weeks, but can’t help mentioning it.
His body and palate are used to the old food, if hes getting the chicken wings then hes already getting more protein and fat than most dogs. Can you add glucosamine over his chicken?
If you do change foods, don’t overlook dental care. If he is open for it, I would feed the chicken in the AM and either brush or give chews to remove the plaque. His dry food should be enough for the rest of the day.
As for how much bone is too much, I couldn’t tell you. I’m still not comfortable with the idea of feeding dogs a raw diet, but understand the theory behind it.
I have dogs with joint issues and just wanted to let you know of a product that I think has worked great and we sprinkle it on the food and my dogs like it so much they would eat it plain. Nzymes, it is for joints and other things. The down side would be it took about a month for it to build up and work but ever since then my dogs have been great. If I run out and have to go without they start to limp again. Then you can serve what ever food he likes. My dogs have lived past there range, I think in part to the Nzymes. There is a website by the same name with a lot of info. But I buy on a different cheaper one.
They make a powdered glucosamine supplement that you could sprinkle on his food.
