HELP?! Ole' roy vs Chicken soup for the dog lovers soul(seniors)—Diarrhea?
My dog Smokey is 10 years old and had been eating ole roy for a long time. It was cheap for my parents to buy. He recently started limping really bad and I found out that he was arthritis in his left elbow. My vet gave me some tablets and we tried those but they didn’t help. So my dads gf got him some liquid medicine called finish line. I started doing research and found out about all the stuff he should have in his diet. So I have been giving him Chicken Soup for the Dog lovers soul (senior dog formula) I mix his finish line(2 table spoons) with the canned chicken soup with the dried chicken soup in the mornings. I wanted him to have more Glucosamine and Chondroitin. He really likes the dog food with the canned, but wont eat much of it when it just plan dry. He hasn’t been on it long, but he does have Diarrhea. Is is because of the switch of food. I did mix the chicken soup with ole roy so it wouldn’t be a total switch. Has anyones dogs benefited from Chicken soup? I want his elbow to get better. Please any advice or personal experience??
I just switched not even a week ago. Also i didnt switch gradually witch wasnt good i guess. I just poured the left over old into the new bag.

You are supposed to switch it over a 10 day period, not in 1 day! And Chicken Soup for the Dog Lovers Soul is a GREAT food, I feed it to our dogs. Their coats got WAY shinier, and they looked great! Ol’ Roy is CRAP CRAP CRAP!!!
that dog food was pulled off the shelf a few years ago!!!!!!!!!!! I dont trust that brand anymore at all!i had an old dog too that i thought deserved only the best!!!! but just because it cost more does not mean its better!
Go back to your other dog food and just add the meds to it!!!! I made my old dog homemade chicken stew for his last days and he loved it!!!!!!!
They also can have rice mixed in too!!! I wanted my dog to go out like a king because i loved him so much!!!!!!!!!! Good luck
if he dont like chicken noodle try putin it with water im 12 so i dont no much about dogs ill reserch and try to help
Switch his food gradually. Mix his old food with his new food, that way he can get used to the new food. It seems as if the quick switch is upsetting his tummy. Eventually, completely switch over to the new food.
I imagine any dog would benefit from switching to just about anything from Ol’ Roy. Ol’ Roy is about the worst possible dog food you could buy. Chicken Soup on the other hand is a pretty good food. That said, there is no single dog food that works well for every single dog.
You don’t say how long ago you switched or how gradual the switch was. The diarrhea could have been set off by the food change if you made the switch too quickly. It could also be caused by suddenly adding a bunch of supplements or due to adding the supplements and changing the diet at the same time. It could also be completely unrelated. My advice would be to take a stool sample to your vet for a fecal exam (the nastier the poop the more likely the vet is to find something abnormal) to check for parasites or bacterial overgrowth and go from there.
Chicken Soup For The Dog Lovers’ Soul gives some dogs runny poo. It’s just something in the food; I’m not sure what though.
Try a different high quality one.

I personally feed my dog the raw diet. He loves it. It’s what nature intended for dogs to eat. However, dogs can be healthy without it, if the kibble they are fed is high quality. Here’s a list of foods with good ingredients: Wellness, Solid Gold, Innova, Healthwise, Chicken Soup For The Dog Lover’s Soul, Canidae, and Diamond NATURALS.
New foods are coming out that are grain free. I believe these are the best foods. Dogs don’t NEED grains. However, some of these foods are too rich and have too much protein for some dogs. Here’s a list of some of them: Taste Of The Wild, Canidae Grain-Free, Wellness CORE, EVO, and Orijen.
Also, you don’t want to listen to most vet’s recommendations on pet food. Most get paid to recommend crappy brands. They are schooled little in pet nutrition, and the classes that they do take are usually funded by an unhealthy brand of food. Here are some brands to avoid: Kibbles ‘N’ Bits, Purina, Iams, Science Diet, Royal Canin, Mighty Dog, Beneful, Dog Chow, Pedigree, and any generic brand.
Always read the ingredients on your pet food before buying, and make sure you know what the ingredients mean!
When switching pet foods, do it over a week long period. On the first day, feed 25% new food, and 75% old food. Do that for two days. When that’s over, do 50% of each. Feed that for two days. Next, feed 75% of new food & 25% of old food. Feed it for two days. After that, feed 100% of the new food, and donate what’s left of the old food to the shelter. You can also feed it to wild birds and squirrels.
I study pet nutrition. My email address is oreos_are_magic_stuff@yahoo.com, and you can email me if you want. I’ll respond to your email quickly, as I am on here almost every day.
Good luck with your dog(s)!
