Holistic Health Care for my “stiff” dog..?
I was wondering if any1 can point me in the right direction for some holistic care for my very special dog.
Ok, my dog is 7y/o and I have recently seen her getting stiff–limping after hiking in the woods or after she’s asleep for awhile. I did get a veterinarian diagnosis…pain meds, and glucosamine. I have started feeding her dog food w/ glucosamine in it, actually its "large breed 50+lbs" my dog weighs about 55bs.
But, I don’t want to cover her problem up with a dose of pain meds, so I declined the pain meds from the vet. -she doesnt seem to be in pain, more like stiff. If need arises I will put her on some but I want to do more for her.
I don’t have holistic vets in my area, and when I asked my vet about holistic care..he gave me a strange look.
I was hoping to get some answers from some of you that are treating your dog with holistic care.
What type of products do you use/reccomed? and do you see the benefits from it?
Can you link me to your favorite holistic web site?
Anything else you would like to add about your experiences with your "stiff" dog and holistic care?
I know this product is not holistic, what do you think of them?

Thanks.
I WILL NOT EVER GIVE MY DOG IBUPROFEN….That will KILL my dog..if I wanted pain management then I would get previcox or other similar product.
PS..Jonsey Buffered Asprin is the ONLY human pain med that can be used on dogs.

Aww, your dog looks almost identical to my sons dog. I have a fourteen-year-old Cocker and a ten-year-old Pyrenees. Nutro makes a holistic feed that you can buy at Petsmart. It has the glucosamine in it, but it also hs other beneficial ingredients in it too. I have eight dogs and this is the first feed all of them like. They should, it is rather pricey when you feed that many dogs. But it is a very good feed and I highly recommend it. Yu may also ask your vet about giving him Rimidyl. (
That may be mispelled, but pronunciation is correct) It is a good product to give for stifness.
Have you ever been stiff? Does it feel good to you? I am betting your vet suggested arthritis as a diagnosis with your dog. try giving him an ibuprofen.
Try these sites. There may be one you do not know about.

acupuncture has helped my dog immensely.
Hello,
Good Luck.
My Mom has a Golden Retriever named Toby, who is about 12 years old. The short version is…Over the summer Toby collapsed when we were away for vacation (PA). She had to make an emergency trip to the vet and had x-rays done. She found out that he has some serious spinal issues and they began pain meds…the collapse was due to major pain. The meds were not effective for a few days…and there was a point where she thought she was going to have to put Toby down. We were crying and taking pictures of him…and he looked so unlike his usual peppy self. After the few days he began to come around a little…but my Mom didn’t like the idea of the heavy meds and the side effects. It was not good for him to be on the meds too long. She was a wreck…she sought a second opinion when she got home (New Jersey) from her regular vet. Well…his outlook was not much better. Again she contemplated having him put down…again such a difficult decision. She felt hopeless to help him.
She started to do some research on alternative medicine…and came across acupuncture. She decided she could not feel okay letting Toby go without trying everything she could. She has been doing acupuncture since July…and toby is WONDERFUL. She went from feeling like it was the end to Toby acting like a PUPPY! It is amazing! Truly amazing. It is unbelievable. At the beginning she had to go every week…now she is down to once a month for maintainence.
I hope you find an answer that will help you and your precious.
Do you supplement her nutrition? It sounds like your dog may have arthritis, but sometimes a nutritional deficiency can cause other health issues that yield similar symptoms.
As for holistic care, K9HealthSolutions.com has Dinovite, a nutritional supplement, that can be added to your pets food and is recommended for joint, coat, and digestive care.

As for the pain, K9HealthSolutions.com also has natural supplements and pain medications that could work for your dog. I know you want to avoid pain meds, but maybe some of the supplements could help:

I hope this helps!
