You will get a ton of conflicting answers on Y!A regarding what is safe and what is not safe for your pet. (As well as a lot of well-intentioned, misinformed answers, such as suggesting allergy medications for an obvious arthritis sufferer)
The bottom line is that your vet is going to know what is safe(r) and what is the best for your pet’s needs. Your vet will have access to the latest findings regarding the various medications and their reactions to our furry friends.
Give your vet a call. Phone consults are free. My vet is always happy to direct me to a local pharmacy if there is a human equivilant that is less expensive than the stuff they are selling at their office.
If you feel that your vet is just trying to rip you off, ask for a copy of your pet’s file and go to a different vet. The new vet may still need to do a general exam, as well as re-run some blood or other tests (to cover their own keister against a lawsuit, should some new condition have popped up), but hopefully you would find someone as great and as trustworthy as mine!
Just make sure you find out the generic name for the "active ingredient" (not just the brand name – products change formulas occasionally), make sure you are getting the correct "strength" of the product (there is a huge difference between regular and extra strength aspirin, for example) and follow instructions for dosing to the letter.
Good luck!
Dogs can take human ibuprofen in SMALL (and i mean small) amounts. As for glucosamine, I’d consult your vet. There will definitely be a dosage difference and possible chemical content difference.
Either way, call your vet and make sure.
Ask a vet or go to ASPCA.org
No. Do not give ibuprofen. Ask your vet but I am 99 percent sure those are both big no no’s. What does he need it for? For pain you can give a baby aspirin. And another example of petsafe human meds is for allergies you could give a benedryl. But it is always best to call a vet first and ask them for dosing and other instructions. A call to the vet is free…so just call to make sure before you give your dog anything. Good luck.
Go to http://www.walkervalleyvet.com for a list of over the counter medicines that are safe to give to dogs and cats and the doses according weight.
Ibuprofen – no, it’s toxic to dogs and giving it can be fatal to your dog. You can use the human glucosamine tablets as long as you know the proper dosage to give your dog. You might want to check with your vet on how much to give.
no ibuprofen, bad for the kidneys.
there are some pretty cheap glucosamine tablets at places like petsmart and petco, but always consult your vet before putting your dog on any supplements.
The glucosamine is fine, but the ibuprofen is dangerous. Buffered aspirin is safer. The dosage for aspirin is 5 mg. per lb of body weight every 12 hours with food.
DO NOT give your dog ibuprofen! I could severely damage his liver. Regarding vitamins? Don’t know.
ask a vet to see on the doseage your dog has to be weighed by a vet then put on meds.
