Is it ok to give your dog glucosamine?
My dog has the occasional limp in his front right leg. He is an American Bulldog/Boxer mix. He is about 5 to 6 years old. This limp only comes around once and awhile and seems to go away when we give him a few joint and hip treats from Pedigree. I was just wondering if since the joint treats contain glucosamine, can I just give the dog a glucosamine supplement. He weighs 85lbs. He is very healthy and just had his check up a few weeks ago. I brought him into the doctor last time this happened and the doctor said nothing was broken. It seems to happen in the morning when he first gets up (like he slept on it wrong) and kind of lingers for a few days. He is playing around, eating, and going to the bathroom normally. He is not sick to his stomach or anything. Is there anything I can give him? Please be specific about brands and such. Is human glucosamine tablets OK? Thank you so much (and thanks from my dog too)!

I give my golden Cosamin. It’s for humans and I get it at Walmart. Just make sure to ask your vet before you give anything.
I give my older dogs glucosamine every day. what evers cheap in the shop or online! I also give them a few tinned pilchards and this seems to help!!
Never give a dog medicine intended for adults. Encourage him to drink more water.
Yes you can! I have a dachshund and the book I read on them recommends glucosamine for back and joint injury prevention. I’m sure it will work for your dog as well. Just ask the vet about the dose size.
Absolutely. It would be wise to ask the vet how many mgs your dogs would need per day. I put a link below to a site that gives recommended dog dosage, but I can’t vouch for the accuracy. Of course, the glucosamine meds for dogs would give you dog dosages. The strength could be different in the people meds, but my vet has given that recommendation to many clients. Keep in mind that glucosamine is a supplement and works best when given consistently over an extended time period. Your vet may recommend a higher starting dose, tapered down to a maintenance dose.
