Is it safe to give a dog glucosamine/msm tablets that are meant for humans?
My dog is 130 lbs, and he is almost 10 years old. Arthritis has been a problem for years, and I’m wondering if it would be the same to give him the stuff meant for humans instead of the ones at the pet store. The ingredients are the same excluding dosage, and I can figure that out. Is there something in the pet meds that makes it easier for animals to digest?

No…its the same thing….its just a supplement, not a medication.
I used to give my 120 lb dog the human version…one capsule a day, and it helped him tremendously.
I gave another dog who had a lot of problems with arthritis Innova Senior Plus (which already has the supplement in it). She did very well on it.
(There is no RDA on glucosamine and chondroitin.)
Yes — all the glucosamines are the same – human and dog.
I buy the Holland & Barrett ones sometimes.
The vet ones are way overpriced for the same stuff.
I would consult your vet first just in case.
They’re the same. I bought the capsules for our old dog at WalMart, they had the cheapest brand out there and they worked very nicely. I got the Glucosamine Chondroitin tables, 1000 mg. I gave him one capsule twice a day in a half a peanut butter sandwich.
2,000 mg a day is the max dosage I believe. Give it twice a day, give the pills about 2 weeks to work. If your dog has pain, you can give half a regular dose aspirin as well. Not Tylenol or ibuprofen, but plain old aspirin.
No. Don’t do it until you check with your veterinarian. Human medication is usually stronger than that of an animal and medications usually need to be divided for the pet.
Yep.My vet even told me to buy the human equivalent of Cosequin DS,which is called Cosamin for humans, because it is almost half the price of the dog formula, yet they are made by the same company and contain the same ingredients!
