Puppy Question?
I have a puppy and I am not sure what breeds are in him…I see GSD. He weighs 35lbs and is 4-5 months old. I could be wrong about the age but the BYB I got him from didn’t even know how old the pups were. So input on that would be good ….also how big will he get weight and height wise…I like bigger…but obviously would still love him if he turned out smaller. Also when should I switch to an adult food. I have about 1-2 months of puppy food left. I feed a mixture of Nutro and Kirkland. Please no inputs on switching foods……..I am happy with what he is on. Also can I supplement Calcium tablets and Glucosamine and Chondritin? Look at the date stamps on the pics for the rescent ones….should only be three pics of him on there.

I do not think he has any lab in him.

If you double their weight at around the 4 month old mark, that should be a reasonable estimate of how big he will be. I know you don’t know the exact age, but I would say around 80lbs. You should have him on a large breed puppy formula right now. You do not want him to grow too quickly at this age. I know you don’t want to switch foods, but even doing a mixture of the two Kirklands dog foods would be okay. . .or two of the Nutro’s. eg a puppy and adult formula. Later on, you could just wean him off onto the adult formula.
I would stay away from any supplements. Glucosamine & C should be fine, but the calcium, I would stay away from. He shouldn’t have excess, it could lead to problems, and he should be getting ample from his reg. diet. , unless advised by the vet. You could be supplementing some fatty acids but if you are going to the trouble of buying all these supplements, it would be just as easy to get a better dog food, I switched from Kirklands to "Solid Gold", immediate difference, and there is no beet pulp which I found out can add to hyperactivity (it’s converted to sugar).
He is a sweety.
He pretty much just looks GSD to me. Sometimes they come out without the black saddle. Height and weight you never know, but large breeds generally don’t finish filling out until 18 months or so, so he’s got a long way to go still growth wise. He should eat puppy food until he turns 1 year old. I don’t think calcium is necessary, but all breeds can benefit from Chondroiton/Glucosamine supplements.
He is a GSD with A labrador.
he looks exactly like a Belgian Malinois….im almost positive that what he is…really cute!!! this breed and german shepherds look very alike…he could be shepherd…but i beg to differ….

http://www.bigpawsonly.com/dog-images/belgian-malinois-picture.jpg …..that is a purebred (looks like yours)
and yepp…i would say he is between 4 months old and 5 months.
I think he is a German mixed breed.
Hello. Your puppy definitely looks predominantly shepherd. All the questions you asked should be answered by your vet for the very best advice. Your puppy should have already gone to the vet for shots/wellness check. All new puppies should go to the vet within 24 hours of coming to their new home.
To answer your questions:
1) If he is shepherd he will probably be between 60-80lbs
2) Puppies should be switched to adult food at 12-18 months of age (ask your vet about your specific dog)
3) I do not suggest supplementing glucosamine or calcium on such a young dog – wait until he is 2-3 years old and then discuss with your vet before starting any supplements.
Good luck with your new puppy
German Shepherd.
He’s a cutie pie. There is a way to tell when your dog has stopped growing and some people use this to tell about when the growing may stop.
On your dogs forepaws, on the inside, just above the ankle joint, if you hold that length of bone gently between the palms of your hands or hand if the whole bone can fit, you will feel a small gap in the bone. This gap closes, fills in with solid bone, knits together as the dog’s growth slows and stops.
To know what you are looking for, find an adult dog and feel around his forepaw, the bone will be smooth. Then do the same with a dog that you know is a puppy, under 3 months of age, and feel the ‘gap’. Then feel your own dog’s forepaw and you will know what you are looking for.
defintly german shep!
maybe even purebred!
and yes he will grow pretty big!
that is one handsome pure bred GSD you have there, excellent conformation, ears tad on the big side but he may well grow into them!!
his head isnt narrow enough to be a belgian shepherd.
dont give him calcium as it will make his bones fuse too quickly and cause osteo problems early in life, the glucosamine will be fine and if anything help him to avoid developing probs with his joints in later life
as far as food goes, think about slowly swapping onto adult food at about 12months old, do it too soon and he wont be getting enough protein for a growing lad!
Hope this helps
I see shepherd in Lincoln, he is beautiful, thanks for sharing the pics! I see poodle in Ruby and she is adorable. I have a black poodle and they look similar. Can you ask your vet what he thinks? I agree with the Nutro, it is great! Have not heard of Kirkland. I wonder about the Glucosamine and Chondroitin for a young dog, I think that is usually for an older or middle aged dog. It is a shame that the owner did not record the birth. You know I just found out about a real AKC breed that I had never heard of, it is called a Dixie Dingo, and Lincoln kind of looks like a dingo, especially his ears, but it may be a mix of two or three. You know now a days, you can do a DNA test and it is about $200. maybe less and that would probably tell you so much more and you would know for sure, ask your vet about that! Thanks for the pictures! godd luck!
his face look a little like an Akita. He got long legs for GSD. My mix has the same thing…She’s blonde/reddish but has long legs, her ears used to stick striaght up…not anymore. I think mine has lab in her and wonder if she’s part greyhound. She has a deep chest and long back legs. Your has a deep chest and long back legs also. GSD are usually has short legs. (My mom’s GSD has shorter legs)
