She just don't eat all the time???
my 12 yr old mixed female ( border collie/g.sheppard) goes thru spurts where she will eat good for couple days and then go 2 or more days without eating?? Is she just fussy?
She gets high end food (Canidea. no cheap stuff) and some wet.. a multi vitamen and glucosamine tablet every day but thats not the problem.. I think she just is not hungry all the time, What do you all think????
she eats Canidae Life Stages made for my puppy and senior dogs.. and she gets like only 2 tbs of wet.. Nature’s Recipe for seniors..
This is nothing new its been on and off for over a year now..

Older dogs will sometimes monitor themselves. If this is a pattern, I would not worry about it but if it is a new habit you should probably check with your vet. You might also try a senior formula food. BOL!
Twelve years old is old for a dog. If shes not eating well or regularly, I would check with a vet.
That happened to my Grandpa’s dog and it turned out she had cancer.
But don’t worry about it. Just take her into the vet for a check-up. They’ll tell you whats wrong. She is an older dog, so maybe that’s just the problem.
Check with your vet and if she’s not on a food designed for senior dogs I would look into that.
She may not be hungry? I assume you leave her food down so she can graze when needed. I would call the vet and see if that’s common. They will tell you if you need to bring her in, or if it is normal.
I feed Orijen and raw prey model (my boss’s dogs are on Orijen mine is on raw prey model, however he occasionally gets part of their kibble) None of the three eat ‘well’ every day. They gorge one day and then don’t touch it the next. Check with your vet about medical issues (she is a senior after all) and look into a senior variety of high quality food. (not sure if Canidea has one)
Due to her age, I would have her checked to rule out medical issues.
Being that she is a border collie/shep, these guys typically are not hoarders and do not eat to just eat. If this is not a new behavior in her, and she has always been like this, its not untypical. If this is a recent change, I would question a couple things:
1. Has she always been on Canidea. Although great stuff, maybe she just does not like it.
2. She is 12 yrs old, and really this is very normal.
3. Unless she has dental issues, such as sore gums or teeth.
In my opinion, unless you see weight loss or other signs that may lead you to believe it is a medical reason, I would consider this normal.
Dogs naturally do not eat twice a day; once in the morning and once at night, nor do they eat once every day. Because they have to fend for themselves; which of course requires energy, they only eat when their energy is depleted. Therefore it is normal for less actives dogs not to want to eat every day, and even more common in dogs who are graze feeders; which really is not a good idea.
You are on the right track with the food, and supplements, if you see not other signs and she is not a graze fed, I would start mixing the wet food in with her dry. And you know, you should really check her gums because you will be surprised how they develop dental issues and can no longer chew hard dry food.
hope that helps.
If this is new behavior I’d have the vet check her as she is older. If this is ongoing don’t worry. She’s getting high quality food and as long as she’s not dropping weight it’s fine.Dogs in the wild only eat when they kill something, not everyday.
