Throat swelling when taking medication…?
It’s not a new medication or anything, I’ve been on it for several months (amitriptlyne for fibromyalgia/CFS) but for the past few weeks whenever I’ve taken it, or most other non-supplemental pills now that I think of of it, my throat just starts to swell. I used to just drink some fruit juice which helped it go away but lately it hasn’t helped. It’s pretty bad but not suffocatingly tight, yet at least not yet. I have to go for a CT scan fairly soon (I developed a diurnal myoclonic twitch a few months ago and my neurologist wants to make sure I don’t have Parkinson’s or anything).
The only other pill I take near that time is a glucosamine/ chondroiten sulfate complex (have bad knees, it keeps my arthritis at bay), and even that is usually1-4 hours before I take the ami.
Other pills I take are Cylexa (depression), yasmin (birth control), Multi-sure Women (multi vitamin – I’m a vegan)
I’ve been taking all of these from .8 to 2 years and never had a problem before… any reason this should be starting now?
If it’s of any help I’m 17 and a medical train wreck, allergic to pollen (and live where it’s winter 8 months out of 12), Vegan but still getting all my nutrients/vitamins etc, a belly dancer and have a fairly active lifestyle considering that I’m next to crippled. Any info or insights would be helpful… thanks in advance.
Yes it really is fibro, and almost all of my medications interact with eachother but none of my doctors/specialists (4 of them) have said it was serious.
I don’t need any special medication for my allergies, the couple monthes a year when it’s a problem I either stay inside or just aviod flowerbeds. I had a yeast infection a couple years ago but it cleared up without any recurrances.
And I’ve had so many blood tests done over the years that any blood-bourne diseases would have showed up in them – aside from the odd cold, nothing else has popped up.

You need a good relationship with your pharmacist because that is the person to whom you should be talking. Make a lost of every medication and every nutritional supplement you are taking. And see if they can do some speedy look-ups for you.
Take that same list to each and every one of your doctors. They should be fully aware of what you are taking and what is contraindicated.
The first thing that is apparent is that amitriptyline, a tricyclic antidepressant often used for CFS to aid sleep, is contraindicated if you are taking Celexa, a selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitor or SSRI.

One of the side effects of Celexa is joint pain.
About the amitriptyline:
Amitriptyline side effects
"Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.
Call your doctor at once if you have any new or worsening symptoms such as: mood or behavior changes, anxiety, panic attacks, trouble sleeping, or if you feel impulsive, irritable, agitated, hostile, aggressive, restless, hyperactive (mentally or physically), more depressed, or have thoughts about suicide or hurting yourself"

It is possible that you are allergic to amitriptyline which by the way is a contraindication for taking this medication.
On to Yasmin, the birth control pill.
Seek medical attention right away if any of these SEVERE side effects occur when using Yasmin:
"Severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue; unusual hoarseness); breast lump or discharge; calf or leg pain, swelling, or tenderness; change in the amount of urine produced; chest pain or heaviness; confusion; coughing of blood; fainting; irregular heartbeat; left-sided jaw, neck, shoulder, or arm pain; mental or mood changes (eg, depression); migraines; missed menstrual period; numbness of an arm or leg; one-sided weakness; persistent, severe, or recurring headache or dizziness; persistent vaginal spotting; severe or persistent trouble sleeping; severe stomach pain or tenderness; shortness of breath; slurred speech; sudden severe vomiting; swelling of the fingers, hands, legs, or ankles; symptoms of liver problems (eg, yellowing of the skin or eyes, fever, dark urine, pale stools, loss of appetite); unusual or severe vaginal bleeding; unusual tiredness or weakness; vaginal irritation or discharge; vision changes (eg, sudden vision loss, double vision)."

Although I don’t this this is the problem and despite the fact that you probably already know this: "Estrogens have also been associated with edema."
Are you taking antihistamines as well? you don’t mention taking anything for that pollen allergy
I would point out that myoclonus is also a drug side effect. The fact that these only occur during the day is more common to the diurnal PD tremor but I think that drug interactions need to be ruled out first as there are no definitive tests for PD at this point. The PET and CT scans as well as MRIs are to rule out other conditions.
Call you doctor and tell him/her about the throat swelling NOW. This could be a serious issue. You are a smart person and all things considered you are remarkable but all of that could be in jeopardy.
Addendum: Have you ever done a controlled detox for allergies, yeast infection? Has celiac’s disease been ruled out? I only mention this because fibromyalgia and arthritis – autoimmune – allergy – How many different docs do you see?
look at the side effects for those pills but i would stop taking them if possible and call your doctor you could have developed an allergy towards one of the pills
I’d definitely make sure your doctor knows about this. The way you describe it, it doesn’t sound like an allergy or adverse reaction. But do make sure you tell your doc.
Interestingly, amitriptilyne is occurs naturally in roast turkey. it’s what makes people so relaxed and sleepy after a big turkey dinner. Cool, huh?
Take good care.
you can develop a reaction to meds after a while–i used to be able to take penecillin–now i break out in hives
it kinda sounds like a muscular reaction though
assummingh you really have fibro (many docs lable any pain as fibro–be sure you confirm teh diagnosis on your own–most people are flasely diagnosed with ity)
twitching can come with it–i get twitches–they feel like i am stuck with an electrified wire
fibro is a neuro disorder–twitches can be caused by various neuro problems
