When will dogface feel the affects of the glucosamine/chondroitin tablets?
Fuzzface lab is almost 9 and I’ve started giving her 600/400 mg of gluco/chondroitin between meals. What can I expect? Will she be more comfortable after a long run or hike? Will it take a while for the supplement to build up?
Whatcha know about this?

It could take a few weeks. It has to build up in their system and maintain the level. 9 years is pretty good for a hiking dog (smile). Be sure and have the Vet check Fuzzface out to be sure she is OK for the hikes. Maybe cut the hikes back a little for a couple weeks is FF seems uncomfortable after a long hike. One thing about our canine friends . . . they will keep going even in pain just to please us humans.
We give it to our Big Girls as a preventative supplement, but they are younger (1 – 3 years). They walk about 3 miles twice a day.
You have a 9 year old Lab. Have you had her to the vet for a wellness check and did your vet suggest the joint supplements?
Is she sore after a run or hike? She may have some arthritis going on or hip dysplasia. Either way, vet check is the best way to go.
She is a senior dog now. Long runs and hikes may have to become shorter and slower.
It is part of them getting older.
The supplements take at least a week to show effects, and they need to be kept on a schedule. There’s no ‘next day’ improvement. It’s a slow process, as the cartilidge and joints have damage and take time to be repaired.
It usually takes several weeks, 4 – 6. I fostered an over-weight 8 year old dog who went from a very sad old dog to a young 8 year old after a diet and glucosamine. Pretty amazing.
I have given it to two old dogs who had issues with arthritis.
I gave it with their food, or gave them food that contained the supplement.
Both of mine responded very quickly – in a matter of days.
In one case, it was the difference between the dog hardly even being able to get up and down, and moving around like there was nothing wrong.
